Disaster risk reduction in Central Asia and South Caucasus was discussed in Almaty

2 October 2017

On 27-29 September 2017 an event focused on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 in Central Asia and South Caucasus took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO Almaty Office participated in the event “Effective implementation of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Central Asia and South Caucasus region (CASC)” organized by UNISDR with the support of the European Commission. During the meeting, UNESCO presented to the participants the UN Action plan for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and the update on UN work in CASC region. The presentation was mainly focused on the contribution of the UN Agencies to the implementation of this action plan in the region.

The UN plan of action on disaster risk reduction for resilience is a document presenting the contribution by the UN to ensure the implementation of the Sendai Framework, aligned with the Paris Agreement and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It addresses the need for coherence of the UN’s resilience building efforts, and it seeks to more effectively integrate UN capacities into national operational and capacity development arrangements.

According to the review, more work has been done on Ńommitment 2 of the Action Plan (build UN system capacity to deliver coordinated support to countries on DRR) and there are still improvements to be made for its better integration in UN programming in the region.

UNESCO operates at the interface between natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication playing a vital role in constructing a global culture of resilient nations and communities. UNESCO assists countries, including in CASC region, to build their capacities in managing disaster and climate risk and with their ability to cope with disasters. The Organization provides a platform for governments to work together and it provides essential scientific and practical advice in DRR.

The above activity contributed to the SDG 11 on building safe and resilient cities and to the SDG 13 on climate change.
