Fostering integration of the Central Asian Freedom of the Press and Expression Network into global and regional networks

The two-day seminar organized by UNESCO in collaboration with NGO Adil Soz, 14-15 September, 2006, Almaty brought together 20 participants, including heads of media advocacy NGOs and media outlets from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Trainers included: Irada Huseynova (Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations, Moscow), Corina Cepoi (Independent Journalism Center), Natalya Steblyuk (Adil Soz Foundation) and Rinata Alibekova (IFEX).

The participants met to discuss ways to better coordinate global, regional and national freedom of expression networks and make information exchange more effective as well as legal education objectives and prospects for journalists professional solidarity.

The seminar ended with the adoption of a plan to strengthen CA freedom of expression network, which addresses high propriety goals. Among them are to actively use information and communication technologies, to hold advocacy and legal trainings to improve journalists legal skills, to lobby for democratic changes to the operating legislation.

The seminar was held by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as part of Communication and Information program, in collaboration with the International Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech, within the scope of the project Strengthening Central Asian Freedom of Expression Network.
