Initiatives to Safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage through Formal and Non-formal Education for Education Quality Improvement in Central Asia

14 June 2019

The UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office will organize a sub-regional meeting on Initiatives to Safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) through Formal and Non-formal Education for Education Quality Improvement in Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 18-19 June 2019.

Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) is an incredibly rich resource and education plays a key role in safeguarding ICH. Intangible cultural heritage can provide specific content and pedagogy for education programmes and can increase the relevance of education and improve learning outcomes. However, while some experiences exist, typically education systems have not given due consideration to the important role they can play in safeguarding ICH. Worldwide, the value of ICH is an integral part of identity, particularly in times of globalization.

This workshop will be organized within the framework of the implementation of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH. The main objectives of the sub-regional workshop are capacity building and strengthening institutional capacity for the protection and transmission of ICH through the Education. In addition, strengthening inter-sectoral cooperation between the Culture and Education sectors in order to promote Peace, Global Citizenship Education and Cultural Diversity among youth in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal 4.

The workshop will be attended by representatives of Culture and Education Ministries as well as Directors of ASPnet schools from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
