Tajikistan: Media and Information Literacy Training for Journalists

On 26-27 September 2019, UNESCO Almaty organized two-day Media and Information Literacy (MIL) workshop for Journalism teachers in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

20 participants from journalism faculties and journalism training centers of the Republic of Tajikistan improved their understanding and skills of MIL based on the UNESCO publication “Media and Information Literacy in Journalism”. The localized publication was developed by Tashkent Office with financial support of the UK government.

The workshop is aimed at improving the competences of teachers and trainers of journalism faculties and training institutions taking into consideration the specificities of the Central Asian states. The workshop contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal SDG4.7 and SGD16.10 and devoted to the International Day for Universal Access to Information, (#AccessToInfoDay, #RightToKnow) as well as to Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2019.

At the seminar, presentations of the MIL issues and group work methods were used. Number of recommendations were developed for introducing MIL into the curricula of universities in Tajikistan, as well as creation a working group proposed to introduce UNESCO model curricula in order to improve the quality of journalism education.
