11 February: International Day of Women and Girls in Science

5 February 2019

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on 11 February, is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. This Day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.

The support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace. Since 2017, the UNESCO Almaty Office celebrates this Day with national partners and UN colleagues in order to raise awareness on the topic. This year, UNESCO Almaty in cooperation with the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, Kazakh National Womens Teacher Training University, UN-Environment and the UN Department of Global Communications organizes an advocacy event for schoolchildren on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in order to promote full and equal access and participation in science for young girls and women.

The event will bring together schoolchildren from the UNESCO Associated Schools Network in Almaty and other regions outside of the city, young women researchers pursuing their PhDs or already conducting research in academia, representatives of the UN Country Team and other partners.

The agenda of the event includes interactive sessions and a quiz. The interactive sessions will be organized in a format of six thematic 'stations' with the aim of sensitizing children on the role of science in their daily lives and in addressing major environmental challenges, as well as in promoting the key SDGs related to science and environment. It will teach children to act together and analyze their actions and actions of other participants. The topics of the six different stations will focus on the major environmental challenges that the world, and Kazakhstan in particular, faces.

After the event, as a follow-up the students will be asked to replicate this activity in their schools in a form of a training for their classmates. The best team will participate in UNESCO-organized field work, which will be the first in a series of field trips for girls in environmental sciences, entitled as Girls and Rocks.
